In hindsight, I think I gained inspiration from the iconic poster from that one Space Opera film from the 70's. I also think the film poster of the man who walks on the moon was where I got the vertical stripe idea..
The idea of the eclipse doubling as an eye for the character in the background was one of the driving concepts for this illustration, along with the steam from the Rider's transformation.
